October is ADHD Awareness Month, and amidst our fast-paced world, ADHD diagnoses are on the rise. As an employer, it’s crucial to grasp this condition and its potential impact on your workforce.

ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, manifests in three types:

  1. Inattentive: Characterised by a lack of attention without hyperactive behaviour.
  2. Impulsive: Marked by hyperactive and impulsive behavior without inattentiveness.
  3. Combined: When both characteristics are present.

Individuals with ADHD often describe both positive and challenging aspects of the condition. On the downside, there may be forgetfulness, difficulty concentrating, and feeling overwhelmed. On the upside, individuals with ADHD can bring qualities like emotional intelligence, high energy levels, hyperfocus, innovation, and creativity to the table.

Recognising that ADHD is unique, and those with the condition are also unique, employers should strive to understand the specific type of ADHD their employees have, how it affects them, and how to provide support. Leveraging the strengths associated with ADHD can lead to a more inclusive and productive workplace.
