Reach out on Time to Talk Day – 1 February 2024

Why talking really is so important for our mental health!

Why is talking so important?

Because 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem in any given year.

Conversations about mental health have the power to change lives. Talking openly can help reduce stigma, create supportive workplaces, and empower us to seek help when we need it.

If someone does open up about their mental health, it might not always feel easy to know what to say. But it doesn’t have to be awkward, and being there for someone can make a big difference.

There’s no right way to talk about mental health, but you can approach it in a helpful way by:

  • Asking questions and listening
  • Thinking about the time and place
  • Not trying to fix it
  • Treating them the same
  • Being patient

There are various places to go or direct people for help. It’s important to talk about things and seek help if you are struggling. Remember, you’re not alone, and it’s okay to ask for help.

  • Talk to the Samaritans
  • Text Shout UK if you’re in a crisis
  • Call Rethink Mental Illness for advice
  • Contact Mind for information and support
  • Tell someone you trust
  • Talk to your GP
