Employers, Be Aware: You’re Responsible for Employees’ Behaviour at the Christmas Party

Haus of HR Issues Important Reminder on Employer Liability During Festive Events

As the holiday season approaches, Christmas parties are a great way for employees to relax, celebrate, and reflect on the year’s achievements. But employers should be mindful of their responsibilities when it comes to festive gatherings. As an independent HR consultancy based in Northamptonshire, we’re reminding business owners that they could be held liable for their employees’ behaviour at such events.

Whether the party is at the workplace or an offsite venue, employers are legally accountable for any misconduct, including harassment, discrimination, or victimisation committed by employees. Rachel Collar, owner of Haus of HR, explains, “As HR consultants, we’re often very busy in January dealing with issues that arise from Christmas parties. Many business owners don’t realise they’re responsible for their employees’ behaviour, and without clear guidelines in place, issues can quickly escalate.”

Rachel offers these tips to help employers set expectations and avoid potential issues during holiday celebrations:

  1. Celebrate Responsibly: Encourage employees to enjoy themselves while being mindful of their actions. Remind them that the party is a chance to unwind and recognise everyone’s hard work.
  2. Consider the Party an Extension of the Workplace: Social events organised by the company are seen as an extension of the work environment, so workplace rules and standards apply, and inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated.
  3. Reinforce Appropriate Conduct: Make sure everyone understands what constitutes appropriate workplace behaviour. Clearly communicate examples of unacceptable conduct, such as harassment, and set boundaries ahead of time.
  4. Emphasise Responsible Alcohol Use: Remind employees to monitor their alcohol intake. Encourage them not to drive under the influence and ensure they know that reporting to work intoxicated will not be tolerated.

By communicating these expectations before the event, employers can help ensure that holiday parties remain enjoyable and safe for everyone involved.
