Featured in The Business Times Discussing Neurodiversity and Inclusive Workplaces

Shining a Spotlight on the Importance of Neurodiversity in the Workplace

Rachel Collar, Founder of Haus of HR, has been featured in the July 2025 edition of The Business Times – Northamptonshire with her latest thought leadership piece: “Inclusion Needs to Go Beyond Basics.”

In an era where diversity and inclusion are seen as key business imperatives, Rachel argues that one vital area is still being overlooked – neurodiversity. Her editorial explores why businesses must move beyond performative inclusion and begin actively designing workplaces that embrace the strengths of neurodivergent individuals.

“Businesses have made real progress on gender and ethnicity,” Rachel explains in the article, “but neurodivergent individuals – those with ADHD, autism, dyslexia and more – are still struggling to be seen, supported and celebrated.”

With around 15–20% of the population estimated to be neurodivergent, the failure to accommodate different cognitive styles means many organisations are missing out on extraordinary talent. Rachel highlights how outdated recruitment processes, rigid workplace expectations, and lack of awareness continue to act as barriers for neurodivergent professionals.

Practical Steps for Creating More Inclusive Workplaces

In the article, Rachel outlines several practical changes that businesses can make today to foster truly inclusive environments. These include:

  • Rewriting job descriptions to avoid ambiguous or excessive criteria
  • Offering alternative interview formats that don’t rely solely on face-to-face interaction
  • Designing flexible workspaces that account for sensory needs
  • Training leaders to recognise and support neurodivergent team members
  • Creating a culture of psychological safety, where employees feel comfortable disclosing and discussing how they work best

Rachel’s call to action is clear: neurodiversity isn’t something to accommodate out of obligation — it’s a wellspring of creativity, innovation and resilience that should be actively embraced.

“Inclusion doesn’t stop at hiring,” she writes. “It’s about how we lead, communicate, and design our systems day to day.”
